Founded in 2005, the Culver Archaeological Project began as a research initiative investigating the archaeology surrounding Barcombe Roman Villa and its associated bathhouse in East Sussex. What started as a focused archaeological research project has since grown into a thriving organisation dedicated to excavation, education, community engagement, and heritage preservation.

Over the years, the project has expanded significantly, establishing a successful field school that provides hands-on archaeological training and developing a range of outreach programmes that connect people of all ages with their local heritage. Through research, excavation, and public engagement, the project has made an important contribution to our understanding of the Roman landscape of the Ouse Valley and the wider history of the region.

A major milestone was reached in 2025 when the Culver Archaeological Project became a registered charity. This achievement reflects the project's growing reputation within both the local community and the wider archaeological sector. Charitable status has strengthened the organisation's ability to preserve and promote archaeological heritage, support educational initiatives, and secure a sustainable future for its work.

Today, the Culver Archaeological Project continues to combine high-quality archaeological research with public participation, ensuring that the discovery and interpretation of the past remains accessible, engaging, and relevant for future generations.

In May 2026 we had an exhibition at Bridge Cottage, Uckfield Museum that was open to schools and the general public over 4 weeks. There was a large display of artifacts and our archaeologists explained the importance of the Roman site at Bridge Farm, Barcombe Mills, Lewes.
