FAQs for volunteers

Our site is a small village about 3 miles north of the town of Lewes. There is limited public transport so having a car is helpful. There is a 29 Bus service run by Brighton and Hove buses from Brighton or Lewes to Tunbridge Wells that stops at Clayhill Service Station. We are half a mile from the stop. Lewes train station has links to Brighton, Gatwick and London.

Camping?

Our campsite is a field on the farm site 3 minutes walk to the HQ that has kitchen facilities, lounge area, showers, toilets, a laundry room. There is an outside sitting area.

Small camper vans maybe able to park in the small car park opposite HQ, there are no electrical hookups.

Food is not provided but we have multiple fridges/freezers and kitchen space for cooking. Ideally bring your own dishes, cutlery, pans but we have backups if you forget.

We don’t provide tents. You may set up on the Sunday evening prior to the Monday start.

Under 18s are not permitted to camp on their own.

There are B&Bs, pubs and hotels locally to stay in if camping is not for you

There is a campsite about 1.5 miles away with electrical hookups.

General information about the dig

We advise coming for a minimum of 5 days but these can be spread over the 6 week dig eg every Monday for 5 weeks or a week’s block. Details about this when you pay.

We only dig Monday to Friday starting at 09:30 to !7:30 with regular breaks during the day.

No experience is needed

We also run a field training school which includes undergraduate lectures as well as digging. Anyone can join but places are limited.

Not keen on digging? Then join us in our Finds Unit. The cost for a week’s digging is the same as a week’s experience in the Finds Unit. Our spaces for the Finds Unit start on Week 3 of the dig as the students are being taught in the Unit during the first 2 weeks.
